Scotlands Hopes Of Reaching The Knockout Stages Of Euro 2024 Are Over After A 2 1 Defeat To Hungary In Budapest

McGinn and Ralston react as Scotland crash out of Euro 2024

Scotland's hopes of reaching the knockout stages of Euro 2024 are over after a 2-1 defeat to Hungary in Budapest.

Despite taking the lead through Ryan Christie, Scotland were pegged back by goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Adam Szalai. The result leaves Scotland bottom of Group B and means they cannot qualify for the last 16.

Speaking after the game, Scotland midfielder John McGinn said: "We're all gutted. We came here with high hopes and we believed we could qualify for the knockout stages.

"But it wasn't to be. Hungary were a good side and they deserved to win. We need to learn from this experience and come back stronger in the next qualifying campaign."

Scotland defender Anthony Ralston added: "I'm absolutely gutted. Proud of this group of boys. We gave it our all but it wasn't enough. We'll learn from this and come back stronger."

The defeat is a major blow to Scotland's hopes of qualifying for a major tournament for the first time since the 1998 World Cup. Steve Clarke's side will now have to focus on the Nations League, which starts in September.

Scotland's next match is a friendly against Turkey on June 16. They will then face Ukraine in the Nations League on June 21 and Armenia on June 24.
